The Benefits of Cleaning Your Solar Panels

Solar panels are a long-term investment, but that investment only pays off if the panels can actually get sunlight. Dust, pollen, salt residue and bird droppings build up on the surface over time, and that layer of grime blocks light from reaching the cells underneath.

The main benefit: better output from the system you already paid for

Studies on solar panel soiling consistently find a real, measurable drop in output from dirty panels — commonly somewhere in the range of 5% on lightly soiled panels up to 20% or more when panels haven’t been cleaned in a long time or are especially exposed to dust, pollen or coastal salt. On the Gold Coast, salt-laden air and pollen are both realistic culprits. Put simply: a clean panel produces more electricity than a dirty one, for the exact same amount of sunlight.

Other benefits worth knowing about

  • Faster return on your investment. Panels that are performing closer to their rated output get you back to break-even on your system sooner.
  • Spotting problems early. Getting up close to your panels regularly makes it easier to notice cracked cells, loose fittings or bird nesting problems before they become bigger issues.
  • Even performance across the array. A single heavily soiled panel (say, under a tree or near a corner where debris collects) can drag down the performance of an entire string, depending on your system’s wiring. Keeping all panels equally clean avoids that imbalance.
  • Protecting your warranty. Some manufacturers’ warranty terms expect a reasonable level of maintenance. Regular cleaning is a simple way to stay on the right side of that.
  • Making the most of Gold Coast sunshine. We get plenty of sun here — it’s a waste if a layer of grime is stopping your system from making the most of it.

How often should solar panels be cleaned?

It depends on your location and what’s nearby. Homes near the coast, under trees, or close to busy roads tend to collect grime faster and may benefit from cleaning every few months. Homes in more sheltered, low-dust areas can often go longer between cleans.
