Solar panels are a long-term investment, but that investment only pays off if the panels can actually get sunlight. Dust, pollen, salt residue and bird droppings build up on the surface over time, and that layer of grime blocks light from reaching the cells underneath.

Studies on solar panel soiling consistently find a real, measurable drop in output from dirty panels — commonly somewhere in the range of 5% on lightly soiled panels up to 20% or more when panels haven’t been cleaned in a long time or are especially exposed to dust, pollen or coastal salt.
